Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), who, in the novel. plays piano duets with the young Aleksander, was one of the world's greatest pianists and composers. His magisterial third piano concerto is played both by Daniyal and Kovi at the novel's conclusion. Here it is played by Rachmaninoff himself in his 1939 recording
